Michael Dawson explains how he knew ‘incredible’ Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire would reach superstardom

Michael Dawson insists he always knew Harry Maguire would make it to the top.

The Manchester United captain scored in England’s 4-0 thrashing of Ukraine to set up a Euro 2020 semi-final clash with Denmark.

Maguire played alongside Dawson for three seasons at Hull City, before joining Leicester in 2017.

Two years at the King Power Stadium then convinced Manchester United to make him the world’s most expensive defender with an £80million transfer.

And Dawson is not surprised by his former teammate’s rise to superstardom.

He told talkSPORT: “We both signed for Hull City at the same time. He came from Sheffield United.

“He had to be patient [for his chance] because of myself and Curtis Davies.

“It was our first year in the Premier League and unfortunately we got relegated, but we then bounced back to the Premier League.

“In my third season there, he then played nigh on every game and that’s when he got the recognition.

“When you share a dressing room and a pitch with players, you realise what their character is like. He travelled everywhere and didn’t really play for two seasons.

“Our third year in the Premier League when we got relegated, he then got his move to Leicester City.

“I honestly knew it would be a stepping stone. I spoke to people and said, ‘Wes Morgan and Robert Huth won the Premier League, but they won’t have seen a player like Harry Maguire’.

“He gets on the ball, brings the ball out, starts attacks. He’s incredible. I’ve always been a massive fan.”
