Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy wins another award in his first season for the Blues

Edouard Mendy just can’t stop winning at the moment and has picked up another individual honour

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has scooped up the award for the best African International at the 2021 Ghana Football Awards ceremony.

Mendy, 29, has had a great first season in the Blue of Chelsea- winning the Champions League, coming second in the Premier League Golden Glove race (16) behind Manchester City’s Emerson (19) and now winning this latest Ghanaian football award.

The Senegalese only signed for the club last summer from French side Rennes in a deal costing the Blues around £21.6million according to Transfermarkt.

Goalkeeper Mendy played a total of 44 appearances in all competitions for Thomas Tuchel’s side last season, helping massively in all of Chelsea’s successes.

From making vital saves in countless games including from Karim Benzema in the Champions League semi-final, to just providing that calming influence in Premier League games that the Blues have needed- the talents of the 29-year-old can’t be underestimated.

It’s unbelievable to think that at the age of 22, the cousin of Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy was unemployed and on the brink of throwing in the towel when it came to his footballing career.

The turnaround since then has been nothing short of outstanding, and this latest accolade at the Ghana Football Awards has made this journey worthwhile.

Speaking to the ceremony, the Senegal International expressed his delight in winning the award.

Mendy said: “Hi everyone. I’m happy and grateful to receive this award from the Ghana Football Awards.

“It has been an incredible year for me, and winning the Champions League remains one of the best achievements of my life.

“I thank all Ghanaians and Africans all across the world for the support and the prayers, and I appreciate this recognition as the best African International player.

Recording save percentages of 70.5% in the Premier League, and 90.9% in the UEFA Champions League (as per FBref) illustrates just what a brilliant year it has been for the 29-year-old.

Chelsea fans will be hoping for more of the same next season from Mendy, as Tuchel’s side look to mount a title challenge to current Premier League Champions Manchester City.
